I have many many kitchen gadgets and toys. If I could only have one though, I would choose my rice cooker.

Iapos;ve had this thing longer than my seven year old has been alive and itapos;s still hanging in there. The small plastic part that catches the water from the lid after you open it has broken off but I just hold a towel over the empty space and it works fine. It was either given to me by my Oma or my mom and it would probably cost a pretty penny to replace. I know that I wonapos;t be able to find a reasonable substitute at any old department store. Iapos;ll probably have to go to the Korean Market in south Jersey. They have a massive selection of rice cookers and I can only hope that one of them will preform as steadfastly has this one has. It will be a sad day when I have to retire it.

Speaking of pretty pennies, I was in Costco last week and I was shopping around. I usually buy the big bags of rice from there and they last a long time. My current bag is just now getting to where I need to replenish my supply and so I was casually pricing the rice. I read the issue of The Economist several months back that talked about the rising cost of rice but this is the first time that Iapos;ve shopped for it since I read that article and I was floored. My heart sank when I thought about the millions of people who depend on rice as a staple of their diet. As Iwas walking down a different aisle, I was listening to another woman complain about how the price of everything has gone up. I am thankful for the fact that I donapos;t have to spend a large part of my grocery budget on meat because back in the day when I used to eat it, I know we spent about 45 of our bill on it. And that was the cheap stuff that canapos;t possibly be good for you Iapos;m really going to miss shopping at the farmerapos;s market. With the changing of the seasons, we only have about three more weeks before it closes down for the year.

Before the market ends, Iapos;ll be doing a few more rounds of canning and Iapos;ll be done until next summer when it all starts back up again. I donapos;t doubt that the months will go by fast and that Iapos;ll be pitting cherries again in no time.
